01 MEDIA TEAM

What the Media Team of the 1st Academic Forum will look like?

As the Editor, I will focus on vision work, output management and project structure, in general keeping everything together and in line with the general team vision. In addition, helping to finalise and refine projects is something I see as a task of the Editor.

2-3 Editorial Assistants will function as experts in a certain field. These fields could include videography, layout, design, photography, academics, writing or IT. The EAs would be asked to concentrate on a field in their application and be chosen in the correspondence with the skills portrayed by the Media Team Members applying.

An open Media Team is what I would like to aim for, not binding Media Team Members to focus areas but rather facilitating their involvement in different areas of media. Creating the vision and main projects would be done on a collaborative basis, involving input from other session participants, but well ahead of the session. While delegate interaction and involvement is one of the things I want to prioritise, I would do that without committee journalists. With full time available to concentrate on their projects, the Media Team is able freely pursue its aims and able to act on a more independent basis. Thus, breaking out of the classic EYP Media Team structure frees up time that we can put on developing fully fleshed out, inspiring output for the session.

What the Media Team will prioritise

Academics

Establishing the Media Team as an active stakeholder in parallel to the media as the fourth estate of power in our society is something I mentioned when talking about my motivation to apply as an Editor.

This could be achieved by a Media Team organised press conference, asking committees to develop mission statements at some point of Committee Work, thus strengthening the inter-committee interaction and information exchange.

I envision the Media Team of the first Academic Forum to be involved in the academic process, collaborating with the other session teams to achieve a satisfying academic outcome. This also includes supporting the chairpersons when creating academic preparation resources, being involved in the research for the Topic Overviews or the equivalent academic preparation tool for the 1st Academic Forum and creating visual elements for them, being more inclusive for the visual learners of the delegates.

Additionally, supporting the General Assembly through, for example, producing resolution videos is something I would like to achieve with my Media Team.

Freedom

As outlined in the team structure, freeing up time Media Team members would usually spend with their committee is something I would like to achieve. This is undoubtedly a trade-off at first glance, with the concept of committee journalists being well proven in the network. Nevertheless, from my experience in Media Teams disregarding this concept, neither photography, nor delegate interaction and involvement are being compromised, but rather reached in different ways.

Freedom does also means supporting diversity of ideas, as freedom is only lost when opinions are unanimous. A free and protected space for brainstorming and discussing of project ideas is not something I just want to allow, but actively pursue for the Media Team at the 1st Academic Forum. I would like to create a unique creative environment before the session and in project planning phases at the session.

Well-Being

Participants’ well-being is something that has only caught our attention recently in the network. As the Editor of the session, I would like to actively participate in ensuring this is taken into consideration when planning the different programme points. Coffee replacing sleep and the so-called Post-EYP depression are things we celebrate and often pride ourselves in, when in reality they are clearly negative. Emphasizing the importance of trust is something I want to establish in my own team first, then working towards incorporating the feeling of trust in the entire officials team.

Peace

Having learnt about the concept of peace journalism by one of my former editors, it is something I hold close to my heart ever since. Working towards solving crisis and struggles through a realistic outlook on stakeholders’ interests is what defines this concept for me. While a vague term at first, this is in my eyes how the Media Team should envision its projects and report on the topics and corresponding solutions found by the delegates of the session.

It is also close to solution-based journalism, that focuses on reporting on and facilitating the finding of solutions, rather than first and foremost write about the problems.

Being able to transport that vision to my Media Team and then further on to the delegates is something I want to do as I see it as an incredible opportunity to see the world and media from a different perspective.
